a Year of Adventures: Highlights & Lessons Learned

Table of Contents

Introduction

Phew! The holiday season was a whirlwind of tinsel, turkey, and to-do lists. Now that the New Year’s confetti has settled, the first weeks of January are like a cozy blanket of calm. It’s the perfect time to kick back, sip on some hot cocoa, and reflect on the past year’s adventures. Let’s take a moment to look back with gratitude for the amazing escapades we’ve had and maybe even chuckle at a few lessons learned along the way. After all, what’s an adventure without a few hilarious mishaps and memorable moments?

Highlights of the Year

One of my personal highlights this year was finally getting to hike on Isle Royale. The remote beauty of the island, with its rugged landscapes and pristine wilderness, was everything I had hoped for and more. I was really hoping to see a moose, but alas, no such luck. However, I certainly got to see enough moose droppings to know they were around!

Another standout moment was our family hike in the Porcupine Mountains. It was physically challenging for all of us, but I was especially proud of Josh for being able to hike so far despite his physical disability. His determination and resilience were truly inspiring. And then there was Forrest, who kept going even though some of the time he was literally crying with tired frustration. His perseverance and spirit were a testament to the strength and unity of our family. We certainly looked like a ragtag group of adventurers straight out of a comedy movie, but we made it through with a lot of laughs and a few tears.

Lessons Learned

These adventures have taught me the importance of resilience. There were times when the trail seemed too difficult, or the weather turned against us, but pushing through those challenges made all of us stronger. I’ve also learned to be more mindful and present, appreciating the beauty of nature and the peace it brings.

One practical lesson I’ve learned is the importance of preparation. Whether it’s packing the right gear or researching the trail beforehand, being prepared can make all the difference. I’ve also come to value flexibility, as not everything goes according to plan. Being able to adapt and make the best of any situation has been a valuable skill.

Favorite Destinations and Activities

One of my favorite destinations this year was the 12 Mile Beach Cabin in Pictured Rocks (video and posts coming soon.) This cabin is the epitome of cozy charm, nestled right by the stunning shoreline. We lucked out with perfect weather, which made the experience even more magical. Plus, it was conveniently close to other must-see spots, making it the ideal base for our adventures.

My favorite activity, hands down, was our canoe trip down the AuTrain River. Paddling through the serene waters, surrounded by the beauty of nature, was an unforgettable experience. There were moments of laughter, a few splashes, and the occasional “Are we going the right way?” but it all added to the fun. It was the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

Looking Ahead

As we dive into the new year, we’re excited to embrace the skiing and winter camping season. We have an exciting trip coming up where we’ll be staying in a yurt—something I’ve always wanted to try. I know it will be a challenge, with an almost four mile hike on snowshoes, but that’s all part of the adventure!

We’re also in the early planning stages for a possible road trip out west to Oregon and the surrounding areas. The thought of exploring new landscapes and discovering hidden gems has us buzzing with excitement. This means we also have goals to work on our fitness and learn more outdoor skills to make the most of our adventures.

You can also expect more updates as we look into ways to outfit our new 4Runner with accessories and maybe even a rooftop tent. It’s going to be an exciting year full of new experiences and challenges, and we can’t wait to share it all with you!

Conclusion

As I look back on the past year, I’m filled with gratitude for the incredible adventures I’ve been able to embark on. It’s not always easy to plan or find the budget for these trips, but in the end, the experiences are what make life worth living. Material possessions will come and go, but the relationships and the memories we create are what truly last.

So here’s to another year of adventures, laughter, and unforgettable moments. Let’s continue to explore, learn, and grow together. Cheers to the journey ahead!
